At one point I saw an occupational therapist as part of a rehabilitation process. One day they asked me what time I normally get up. That varies a lot and depends on whether I have a good or a bad day. On good days I get up at 10 in the morning, on bad days I don't get up until 4 in the afternoon.
Then the occupational therapist began to explain that rest and regularity are important. Everything you always do at the same time or in the same way automatically becomes an automatism. Automatisms consume less energy than actions that you (unconsciously) have to think about. This way you can save yourself energy. That is why the occupational therapist thought it was important that I wake up at about the same time every day.
It was then that I realised that we were talking about differents things, because I am awake at around the same time every day! So I told I always wake up between 5:30 and 6:00, but that it is too early for me to get physically active. Or I have too much trouble with POTS to be able to go vertical that early. That's why I stay in bed for a few or many hours.
Depending on what day it is, I can be quite active from my bed: I usually start watching TV to wake up slowly. After that I do my e-mail - still lying in my bed, I do voluntary work, I have contact with friends, etc. Sometimes I even have a meeting from my bed, via video calling. My occupational therapist seemed a bit surprised about my schedule.
Anyway, if someone ever asks me what time I get up, from now on I will first ask what they mean! Do they really mean “getting up” or do they rather talk about “waking up”? Because in my case those are two very different things... :-)
